# Controller Stick Drift Repair: PS5, Xbox and Switch (Plus Hall-Effect Upgrades)

*Stick drift is mechanical wear, not a software bug. What causes it on each platform, what you can try free, what a repair involves, and when a Hall-effect stick is worth paying for.*

Stick drift is repairable on every current controller — DualSense, Xbox Wireless, Joy-Con, Elite and DualSense Edge. It is a soldering job on the controller board to replace the stick module, and it costs a fraction of a new controller. On premium pads it is not close.

## Why it happens, on every platform

Standard analogue sticks read position with potentiometers: a small resistive track with a wiper dragging across it. That contact is the whole problem. Every hour of play abrades the track slightly and works dust into it, until the resting position no longer reads as centre. The console then does exactly what it is told and moves your character.

Nothing you did caused it and no amount of care prevents it. It is a consumable part being consumed, which is why drift shows up across all three platforms rather than being one manufacturer's defect.

## What to try before booking anything

Recalibrate the stick in the console settings. Update the controller firmware — all three platforms push controller updates, and they do occasionally change deadzone handling. Then clean around the base of the stick with short bursts of compressed air, holding the can upright.

If the drift comes back within an hour of play, stop troubleshooting. The module is worn and no software fix will hold.

## Standard module or Hall-effect?

A like-for-like module replacement restores the controller to how it left the factory. It is the cheaper option and it is the right call for a controller that sees a few hours a week.

Hall-effect sticks sense position magnetically. There is no physical contact between the moving part and the sensor, so there is no track to wear out. They cost more to fit. For a controller you use daily, or one you have already had repaired once, that difference buys you not doing this again — which is usually the better deal.

We fit both, and we will tell you which one we would choose based on how you actually play rather than which is more profitable.

## Platform differences worth knowing

DualSense pads pack a lot into a small shell, and the sticks sit close to the adaptive-trigger assemblies, so reassembly matters as much as the soldering. Xbox controllers are more forgiving mechanically but the Elite series adds swappable components that need care. Joy-Cons are the most cramped of the three and the most likely to have been opened badly before they reach us.

None of that changes whether the repair is worth doing. It changes how long it takes, which is why we quote per controller rather than posting one number.

## When the stick is not the problem

A controller that disconnects, will not charge, or has a dead trigger is a different fault, and drift-style symptoms can occasionally come from a failing battery browning out the board. If your controller does more than one odd thing, mention all of it — diagnosing the whole controller at once is free and saves a second visit.

## Bring them all at once

Most households that have one drifting controller have two. We are inside Tucson Mall at 4500 N Oracle Rd, Ste 204, open Mon–Sat 9am–9pm and Sun 10am–6pm. Walk in with the controllers, get a free diagnostic on each, and only pay for what you decide to fix.

## The flat-table test

Put the controller down on a level surface, open something with visible analogue input, and take your hands off completely. Movement with nobody touching it is drift. Movement only while held is often thumb contact rather than a fault, and it is worth ruling out before paying anyone.

Check both sticks independently. Drift on both at once on a controller that has not been dropped is unusual and sometimes points at a firmware or calibration issue rather than two simultaneously worn modules.

## What replacement actually involves

The controller is opened, the board exposed, and the stick module desoldered — three or four joints per stick plus the mounting legs. A new module goes in, the controller is reassembled and then calibrated and tested on-console before it goes back.

It is not a part you clip in. That is why it is a workshop repair, and why controllers that have been opened by someone with a soldering iron and optimism often arrive with lifted pads that have to be repaired first.

## When a controller is not worth repairing

A basic third-party pad is sometimes cheaper to replace than to repair, and we will tell you when that is the case rather than take the work. The calculation flips completely on a DualSense Edge or an Xbox Elite, where the pad costs several times what a stick module and an hour of labour do.

## Turnaround and warranty

Most controller repairs are same-day, and we are inside Tucson Mall at 4500 N Oracle Rd, Ste 204 — open Mon–Sat 9am–9pm and Sun 10am–6pm, walk-ins welcome. The work carries our 90-day service warranty, excluding physical and liquid damage.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is stick drift repairable, or do I need a new controller?

Repairable on every current controller — DualSense, Xbox Wireless, Joy-Con and Elite pads. The stick module is replaced on the controller board. It is usually far cheaper than a new controller, especially for a DualSense Edge or an Elite.

### Why does drift keep coming back?

Because a standard stick wears by design. Replacing like-for-like restores it but starts the same clock again. Hall-effect sticks have no wearing contact, which is why we suggest them for controllers that have already been repaired once.

### Can I fix stick drift myself?

Try recalibration, a firmware update and careful compressed air around the stick base first — that resolves contamination cases. If drift returns within an hour of play, the module is worn and needs replacing.

### How much does controller repair cost?

It is quoted per controller because the module, board and labour differ between platforms. Call (520) 477-8822 with the controller and the fault and we will price it over the phone in a couple of minutes.

### Do you repair Elite and DualSense Edge controllers?

Yes, and those are the ones where repair makes the most financial sense — replacing a premium pad costs several times what a stick module does.
