## Overview

We repair the Pixel 9a. Released in spring 2025, it is the first Pixel without a camera bar: its two rear cameras sit almost flush with a plastic back. Google got there partly by using a thinner plastic OLED panel, which also left room for a 5,100 mAh battery, the largest in any Pixel at launch. The front glass is Gorilla Glass 3 over a 6.3-inch screen, and the phone is rated IP68 and charges wirelessly at 7.5W.

## How the 9a's design changes what breaks

With no raised bar, the camera covers no longer take the first hit when the phone lands face up, so camera lens damage is less common on the 9a than on older Pixels. The plastic back scuffs instead of shattering. That leaves the screen as the usual casualty, and Gorilla Glass 3 cracks more readily than the Victus glass on the Pixel 9.

If the picture is still fine but the glass is broken, we'll check whether the display underneath is intact before we quote.

## Pixel 9a screen replacement and fingerprint unlock

Unlike the Pixel 9, which uses an ultrasonic sensor, the 9a reads fingerprints with an optical sensor under the display. Optical sensors shine light through the screen to read your finger, so they are sensitive to the panel above them, and a new display has to be calibrated to the sensor. We test unlock before the phone goes back, and you should expect to register your fingerprints again.

If fingerprint unlock struggles with a damp or dirty finger, that is typical of optical sensors rather than a sign of damage.

Because the 9a uses a thinner plastic OLED, the display assembly is a 9a-specific part. A Pixel 9 screen, although the same 6.3-inch size, is a different panel built around a different kind of fingerprint sensor and is not interchangeable, so tell us it’s the 9a when you call.

## The plastic back: scuffs, cracks and the battery underneath

Scratches and scuffs on the 9a’s back are cosmetic. A crack through the plastic, or a back that has started to separate from the frame, is worth showing us, because the back is part of the seal behind the IP68 rating. A back that bulges outward is a battery problem, not drop damage; stop charging the phone and bring it in.

Remember that the IP68 rating applies to the phone as it left the factory. After any repair, be cautious around water.

## Battery life and charging faults on the 9a

A battery this size should last a long time, but heat still ages it, and a phone left in a parked car in Tucson ages its battery faster than daily use does. The 9a shows its cycle count under Settings, About phone, Battery information, and its battery health screen switches to Reduced below 80 percent capacity. That is the honest signal for a replacement.

The 9a charges at up to 23W by USB-C and 7.5W on a Qi pad. If a pad still charges it and a cable doesn't, the port is the suspect; shine a light inside and look for packed lint before assuming the worst. If the phone charges but only slowly on a cable, check that the adapter supports fast charging. If nothing charges it, bring it in so we can test the battery and charging circuit.

## Repair or replace a Pixel 9a?

The 9a is one of the most recent Pixels and Google supports it with long software updates, so a cracked screen or tired battery is almost always worth repairing rather than replacing. If the phone stopped working without a drop or spill, check whether Google’s warranty covers it before paying for anything. Otherwise we’ll look at it and give you the price first.

## Before you bring the 9a in

Back up your phone and bring the PIN or pattern. Hardware repairs leave your data in place, and the 9a's Repair mode under Settings, System can lock your personal data away for the duration. Remove the case and any screen protector you want kept, since a protector has to come off for a screen repair anyway.
