## Overview

Yes. The 10th-generation iPad, released in 2022, is the model that moved the standard iPad to a flat-edged design with a 10.9-inch screen, a USB-C port and Touch ID in the top button. One detail matters more than the rest when it breaks: its display is not laminated. There is a thin air gap between the front glass and the LCD, and the touch glass is a separate part from the screen underneath.

In practice that often works in your favor. If the glass is shattered but the picture behind it is still clean, with no lines, dark patches or bleeding color, the repair is usually just the glass and the LCD stays. If the image itself is damaged, the LCD has to be replaced as well. We open the case and check which you have before we quote, so you aren't paying for a part you don't need. The other common job on this model is the USB-C port, which collects lint from bags and cases just like a phone does.

## Glass only, or glass and LCD? How to tell on the iPad 10th gen

Turn the screen on and look past the cracks. A clean image with correct colors, even under a web of broken glass, points to a glass-only repair. Lines running across the picture, a black or purple blot spreading from the impact point, a backlight that glows unevenly, or a blank screen on an iPad that is clearly still running (it makes sounds or shows up when plugged into a computer) all mean the LCD is damaged too.

Touch is the other clue. On this model the touch sensor is part of the front glass, so dead zones, phantom taps or a keyboard that types on its own usually trace back to the glass rather than the LCD. That is good news, because the touch fault goes away with the new glass.

## How the screen comes off a 10th-generation iPad

The front glass is held to the aluminum case with adhesive around its edge. Because the glass has to be warmed and lifted carefully, we soften that adhesive with heat, work thin tools under the edge and raise the glass without pressing on the LCD below, which is a separate and fragile panel on this model. Badly shattered glass makes the job slower, since it tends to come away in fragments rather than as one sheet, and every piece has to be cleared before the new glass goes down.

With the new glass in place we test touch from edge to edge, check the Touch ID top button and the front camera on the long edge, and seal it with fresh adhesive so it sits flush with the frame.

## USB-C charging problems on the 10th gen

This was the first standard iPad to charge through USB-C instead of Lightning. The port is deep and open, and in a backpack or a child's tablet case it packs with lint and crumbs until the cable no longer seats fully. The signs are charging only at one angle, charging that starts and stops, or a plug that feels loose.

Many of these iPads only need the port cleaned out carefully. When the contacts are worn or the port is physically damaged, it is replaced. Try a different cable and charger before you bring it in; a frayed cable causes exactly the same symptoms and is a much cheaper fix.

## Is a 10th gen iPad worth repairing?

For most owners, yes. It is still a capable everyday tablet, and when only the glass is broken the repair costs less than replacing glass and LCD together, because the original LCD goes back in.

The case where we would pause is a bent case. If the iPad has been sat on and the aluminum is visibly bowed, new glass may not sit flat or stay sealed, and we tell you that before you spend anything on it.

## Before you bring your iPad in

If it still turns on, back it up to iCloud or a computer. A screen repair doesn't require erasing the iPad, but a recent backup protects you if something else turns out to be wrong. Bring the passcode so we can test touch, Touch ID and the cameras after reassembly.

Find the model number in Settings, General, About. If you'd like a firm figure before the trip to Tucson Mall, call (520) 477-8822 with that number and tell us what is broken.
