Phone Charging Port Repair in Tucson

Cell Phone Repair at Gamers Warehouse in Tucson

Yes, we repair charging ports on iPhones, Samsung Galaxy phones and Google Pixels. A phone that won't charge doesn't always need a new charging port. Many of the 'dead ports' we see are packed with pocket lint, pressed into a solid pad at the bottom of the connector every time the cable goes in. The tell-tale sign is a plug that no longer clicks in fully, or one that only charges when you hold it at an angle.

For iPhones, our published charging port prices run from $59.99 on the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus to $149 on the iPhone 14 Pro Max. For Samsung phones they run from $59.99 on the Samsung S3 to $99.99 on the Samsung S9, and for Google Pixel and Nexus phones from $89.99 on the Pixel and Pixel XL to $149.99 on the Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL. If it turns out your port only needed a clean, we'll tell you.

Port, cable, adapter or battery? Rule out the cheap causes first

Rule out the cheap causes first: try a different cable and power adapter, and if wireless charging works but wired charging doesn't, the port or the cable is the likely culprit. If the phone won't charge either way, the battery or the charging circuit is the next suspect, and that is a different repair. A phone that shows it is charging but gains almost nothing in an hour usually has a weak cable, a low-power adapter or a worn battery rather than a failed port.

Lightning or USB-C: what to look for in your phone's port

Power the phone off and shine a light into the port. iPhones before the iPhone 15 use Lightning, a slot with contacts along its walls; lint collects at the far end and stops the plug seating. The iPhone 15 and later, and every current Galaxy and Pixel, use USB-C, which has a thin tongue in the middle of the port. Lint packs around that tongue, and the tongue itself can bend or crack if a cable is forced in at an angle or the phone is dropped while plugged in.

Don't dig at the port with metal, which can short or bend the contacts. A wooden toothpick used gently is the safest home tool; if the lint is compacted, let us clean it.

Moisture warnings and the charging port

iPhones and Galaxy phones can warn you when they detect liquid in the port, and they may stop charging until it dries. Apple's advice is to unplug, tap the phone gently with the port facing down, and leave it somewhere dry with some airflow for at least 30 minutes, and up to a day, before trying again. Apple also says not to use heat, compressed air, cotton swabs or rice. If the warning appears every time with a dry phone and a cable that works on other devices, the port may need service.

When a charging port needs replacing

A port that wobbles, has bent pins, has been through liquid, or charges intermittently however clean it is needs replacing. That means removing the old port — desoldering it from the board, or swapping its flex assembly on models where the port sits on its own cable — then fitting the new one and testing it with a cable before the phone is closed up.

On many Galaxy models, the USB-C port is mounted on a small board with the microphone and other parts, and the whole assembly is replaced together. If the port's connection to the main board is damaged, that is board-level work, which takes longer and is quoted separately.

Protecting the port after the repair

Plug in straight, unplug by the connector rather than the cord, and avoid using the phone heavily while it hangs from a short cable, which levers the port every time you move. If you carry the phone in a pocket, check the port every few months. Back the phone up before you come in, and bring the cable you normally use so we can test with it.

Wireless charging as a stopgap

If your phone supports wireless charging, a pad can keep it alive while you wait to bring it in, and it is a useful test in itself: a phone that charges normally on a pad but not through any cable almost always has a port problem rather than a battery one. Wireless charging won't help with data transfer or wired accessories, so it is a workaround rather than a fix. Walk in at our Tucson Mall store when it suits you and we will look at the port first.
