Pixel 8a Repair in Tucson
We repair the Pixel 8a, released in May 2024, which puts Pixel 8 performance into a cheaper body: a 6.1-inch Actua OLED at up to 120Hz under Gorilla Glass 3, a matte composite back, a matte aluminum frame and a 4,492 mAh battery, rated IP67. The composite back holds up to drops better than glass, so on this model the screen takes most of the damage, and Gorilla Glass 3 scratches and cracks more easily than the Victus glass on the Pixel 8.
When you call (520) 477-8822, tell us it's the 8a rather than the 8; the parts don't interchange. We'll give you a firm price in place of the estimate in the table. Walk-ins and appointments are both welcome at our Tucson Mall store.
Cracked Pixel 8a screen: what's involved
On the 8a the glass and the OLED are replaced as one display assembly. If the picture is intact and touch works everywhere, the crack is in the glass only and you have some time, though cracks spread with pocket pressure. Lines, black spots, flicker or touch that misfires mean the panel is damaged.
The 8a's fingerprint sensor is optical and sits under the display. After a new screen goes in, the sensor is calibrated to it and tested, and you'll likely need to add your fingerprints again.
Gorilla Glass 3 is also more prone to fine scratches from sand and keys. A scratched screen that is not cracked doesn’t need replacing; a good screen protector is the cheaper answer, and the scratches won’t affect touch or the fingerprint sensor.
Using wireless charging to find a charging fault
The 8a supports Qi wireless charging at 7.5W, so if wireless charging still works but a cable doesn't, the USB-C port or the cable is the likely culprit, not the battery. Try a second cable and a different adapter first. If those don't help, look into the port with a flashlight; lint packed at the bottom is a common cause, and cleaning it is a much smaller job than replacing the port.
If the phone charges by both methods but drains quickly, check the cycle count described below before deciding between a battery and a port; the fault is rarely both.
Checking battery health on the 8a
The 8a was the first Pixel to show battery details in Settings, under About phone, Battery information, including the cycle count and manufacture date. Google rates the 8a's battery to keep up to 80 percent of its capacity for about 1,000 cycles, and the battery health screen changes to Reduced when it falls below that. If yours reads Reduced, or the phone no longer lasts a day, a new battery is the fix. A back that starts to bow outward is a swelling battery; stop charging and bring it in.
Camera covers and water resistance on the 8a
The 8a has a raised camera bar with two cameras, and a fall onto the back can crack one of their glass covers. If one camera’s photos look hazy while the other’s are sharp, that cover is the likely damage, and replacing it early protects the lens beneath.
The 8a is rated IP67 from the factory. Once a phone has been opened for a repair, or has a cracked screen or back, assume the rating no longer holds and keep it away from water.
Does a scuffed composite back need replacing?
The back can scuff or chip at the corners without letting anything in, so whether it needs replacing is up to you, not a necessity in the way a shattered glass back is. A deep crack through the composite, a back that has separated from the frame, or damage near the camera is different and worth showing us, because it can affect the seal and the wireless charging coil behind it.
Repair or upgrade, and what to bring
The 8a is recent enough that a screen or battery repair usually makes sense; check Google's support site for its software update period if you're weighing it against a new phone. We look at the phone first and tell you the cost before any work starts. Back up beforehand and bring your PIN. Nothing is erased during a hardware repair, and Repair mode under Settings, System is there if you want your data locked away.
