Does Rice Actually Fix a Water-Damaged Phone? (No — Here Is What Works)
Rice does almost nothing for a wet phone, and the waiting makes corrosion worse. What to do in the first ten minutes, what a real water damage service involves, and what it can and cannot save.
Rice does not pull meaningful moisture out of a sealed phone, and the time spent waiting for it to work is time corrosion spends attacking your logic board. The damage from liquid is rarely the water itself — it is the corrosion and the short circuits that follow it, and both are racing you.
The first ten minutes matter more than anything else
Power the phone off and leave it off. Do not plug it in. Do not charge it "just to check". Putting current through a wet board is how a recoverable phone becomes a dead one, and it happens in seconds rather than minutes.
Take the case off, remove the SIM tray to open a vent path, dry the outside with a towel, and stand the phone upright. Then get it to a repair shop. The single biggest factor in whether a liquid-damaged phone survives is how quickly it is opened and cleaned — not how long it sits in a bag of anything.
What a real water damage service involves
Drying a phone out is not a repair. Cleaning the corrosion off is.
The device is opened and the board removed. The corrosion is cleaned off under magnification, usually with an ultrasonic bath and isopropyl alcohol, which reaches under components where a cotton bud never will. Corroded components are inspected and replaced where needed. Only then is the phone reassembled and tested — and tested properly, because a phone that boots is not the same as a phone that is fixed.
That is a materially different process from leaving something to evaporate, and it is why outcomes differ so much between a phone brought in the same day and one that spent a weekend in rice.
Liquid contact indicators
Modern iPhones carry small liquid contact indicators that turn from white to red on contact with water. On iPhone 5 and newer there is one visible in the SIM tray slot; on iPhone 4S and older they sit inside the headphone jack and the dock connector. Look with a torch and you can check yours yourself.
A tripped indicator tells us — and tells Apple — that liquid got inside. It is why liquid damage is excluded from manufacturer warranties and from ours. It is not a trick; it is simply a record that the device met water.
Tucson-specific: monsoon and pools
Two things bring water-damaged phones through our door in Tucson more than anything else. Monsoon downpours catch people out because the rain arrives faster than you can get a phone into a pocket, and a phone in a shirt pocket in a monsoon is a phone in water. The other is pools — a phone that goes into chlorinated water is worse than one that goes into fresh, because the dissolved solids left behind after it dries are conductive.
If a phone has been in a pool or the sea, rinsing it briefly in fresh water before drying it is genuinely better than letting salt or chlorine crystallise on the board. That is the one piece of home first aid that helps.
What it costs and what to expect
Water damage is the one category where we cannot promise a result before we look. We open it, clean it, tell you what we found, and quote from there. Diagnostics are free and the fee comes off the repair if you proceed.
Some phones come back completely. Some have boards too far gone. Where the phone cannot be saved, we will tell you straight and help you get the data off it if that is still possible — and we buy dead handsets, so it does not have to be a total loss.
Bring it in wet
Genuinely — do not wait for it to dry. Gamers Warehouse is inside Tucson Mall at 4500 N Oracle Rd, Ste 204, open Mon–Sat 9am–9pm and Sun 10am–6pm. Walk in with it powered off, and the sooner the better.
Why rice persists as advice
It survives because of survivorship bias. Phones that got briefly damp, dried out and worked again would have worked anyway; the rice took the credit. The ones that corroded quietly over the following fortnight and died are not the ones people tell stories about.
Silica gel is better than rice at absorbing ambient moisture, but neither addresses the actual problem, which is liquid already inside a sealed device and the corrosion it starts immediately.
What "it seems fine" really means
A phone that works after a soaking has not escaped. Corrosion continues under components for days and weeks, and the classic pattern is a device that works perfectly for a fortnight and then develops a charging fault, a dead microphone, or a screen that stops responding in one area.
If your phone got wet and currently works, that is the best possible moment to have it cleaned — not a reason to skip it.
Board-level work and what it can recover
A proper liquid service is board-level: the board comes out, goes through an ultrasonic clean, and is inspected under magnification for corroded components and damaged traces. Where a trace has corroded through, it can often be bridged. Where a component has failed, it can be replaced.
Most Tucson shops do not do this and will tell you a wet phone is a dead phone. It frequently is not.
If the phone cannot be saved
Data recovery is sometimes still possible even when the phone will not boot, depending on what failed. Ask before you write the device off, and do not attempt repeated power-ons in the meantime — each one risks turning a recoverable board into an unrecoverable one.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Does putting a phone in rice work?
- No. Rice does not draw meaningful moisture out of a sealed device, and the hours spent waiting are hours corrosion spends working on the logic board. It is the single most costly piece of folk advice in phone repair.
- What should I do in the first ten minutes?
- Power the phone off and leave it off. Do not plug it in and do not charge it to test it. Remove the case and SIM tray, dry the outside, keep it upright, and get it to a repair shop as soon as you reasonably can.
- Why does charging a wet phone make it worse?
- Putting current through a wet board causes shorts between components that were merely damp a moment earlier. A phone that could have been cleaned and saved can become unrecoverable in seconds.
- Is water damage covered by your warranty?
- No. Our 90-day warranty covers the services we perform and explicitly excludes physical and liquid damage — that is standard across the industry, and it is why the liquid contact indicators exist.
- Can you always save a water-damaged phone?
- No, and we will not promise otherwise. Some boards clean up completely; some are too far gone. We tell you what we find before you commit, and where the phone cannot be saved we will try to recover your data.
