Does Third-Party Repair Void Your Warranty? The Truth for Arizona Customers
US law is clearer on this than most people think. What a manufacturer can and cannot refuse, what an independent repair does affect, and what our own warranty covers.
Under the US Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer generally cannot void your entire warranty simply because you had a device repaired independently. Tying warranty coverage to the use of their own service or branded parts is not permitted unless those parts and service are provided free of charge. What a manufacturer can do is decline to cover a specific fault if the independent repair actually caused it.
What the law says in plain terms
The commonly cited example is a car: a dealer cannot refuse to honour your warranty because you had the oil changed elsewhere. The same principle applies to consumer electronics. "Warranty void if seal broken" stickers have been the subject of specific US regulatory warnings for exactly this reason.
The practical upshot is that the blanket claim — repair it anywhere but here and you lose everything — is not accurate. Plenty of people avoid a sensible, affordable repair because they believe it is.
Where the nuance genuinely is
It is not a blank cheque either, and we would rather be straight about that than tell you what you want to hear.
If an independent repair damages something, the manufacturer is not obliged to cover that damage. That is reasonable and it is the same standard we would apply to our own work.
Separately, some manufacturer functions are affected by parts changes regardless of the law. Face ID depends on components paired to the individual phone; a screen repair that does not transfer them breaks it. Some devices display a message noting a non-genuine part was fitted. Those are engineering realities, not warranty policy, and a good shop tells you about them before the repair rather than after.
The questions worth asking any repair shop
Do you transfer the original Face ID or Touch ID components? Are you fitting genuine or aftermarket parts, and what does each cost? What warranty do you give on the part and on the labour? Will this repair produce any on-device notice about non-genuine parts?
A shop that answers those four clearly is one you can make an informed decision with. Vagueness on any of them is the signal.
What our warranty actually covers
Gamers Warehouse provides a 90-day warranty on the services we perform. Physical damage and liquid or water damage are not covered — a new crack is a new accident, not a failure of the previous repair.
For repairs using genuine components, we provide a 1-year limited warranty covering both the OEM replacement part and the associated repair service. That is the stronger of the two and it is the reason we offer genuine parts wherever they are available.
Both are written out in full in our terms of service rather than summarised on a receipt.
When to use the manufacturer instead
If your device is in warranty and the fault is not accidental damage, use the manufacturer. You should not be paying us for something they will fix for nothing, and we will tell you so at the counter. Where the manufacturer has an active service programme for a known defect, that is also their job rather than ours.
Out of warranty, or with accidental damage, the decision is about price, turnaround and who you trust with the device. That is where we would like to earn the work.
Talk to us first
Diagnostics are free and there is no obligation. We are inside Tucson Mall at 4500 N Oracle Rd, Ste 204, open Mon–Sat 9am–9pm and Sun 10am–6pm. Bring the device and we will tell you honestly which route makes the most sense — including when that route is not us.
Why the myth is so persistent
Partly because "warranty void if removed" stickers were standard for decades and nobody was ever told they stopped being enforceable. Partly because it is a useful thing for a manufacturer to leave uncorrected. The result is that a lot of people pay considerably more than necessary, or leave a device broken, on the strength of something that is not accurate.
Knowing the actual position does not oblige you to use an independent shop. It just means the choice is yours to make on price and convenience rather than under a misapprehension.
Keep your paperwork
If you do use an independent repair while a device is in warranty, keep the invoice and note exactly what was replaced. If a later, unrelated fault arises and the manufacturer suggests the repair caused it, a clear record of what was and was not touched is the whole of your case.
We itemise what was replaced on every invoice for exactly this reason.
Repairs that genuinely are better done by the manufacturer
Anything covered by an active service programme. Anything still in warranty that is not accidental damage. Devices where a sealed-unit exchange is the manufacturer's standard remedy and costs less than a component repair would.
We will point you to the manufacturer in all three cases. Turning away work that somebody else will do for free is not generosity; it is the only sensible way to treat a customer you would like to see again.
What to expect from us
A free diagnostic, a price before any work starts, a clear statement of whether the part is genuine or aftermarket, and a written warranty — 90 days on our service, or a 1-year limited warranty where genuine components were used, covering both the part and the work.
Physical and liquid damage are excluded from both, which is standard and which we say plainly rather than burying.
Come and ask
We are inside Tucson Mall at 4500 N Oracle Rd, Ste 204, open Mon–Sat 9am–9pm and Sun 10am–6pm. Walk-ins and appointments are both welcome and the diagnostic costs nothing.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Can a manufacturer void my warranty for using an independent repair shop?
- Not wholesale. Under the US Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a manufacturer generally cannot condition your warranty on using their own service or parts unless those are provided free of charge. They can decline to cover damage that a repair actually caused.
- So there is no downside at all?
- That is not what it says either. A manufacturer can refuse to cover a specific fault if they can show the independent repair caused it, and some manufacturer features are genuinely affected by parts changes. Go in informed rather than assuming either extreme.
- What warranty do you give?
- A 90-day warranty on the services we perform, excluding physical and liquid damage. Repairs using genuine components carry a 1-year limited warranty covering both the OEM part and the repair service.
- Does your warranty cover a new crack?
- No. Physical damage after the repair is not covered — that is a fresh accident rather than a failure of our work. We will always quote the new repair fairly.
- Is this legal advice?
- No. It is a plain-language summary of a well-known US consumer protection statute so you know the right questions to ask. For a specific dispute, talk to a qualified professional.
