When Should You Replace Your iPhone Battery? The 80% Rule Explained

Apple treats 80% capacity as worn. What that number actually means, the symptoms that matter more than the percentage, and what a replacement costs in Tucson.

iPhone

Apple treats 80% of original capacity as the point where an iPhone battery is considered worn, and you can check yours in Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. Below 80% — or any time the phone shuts down unexpectedly while still showing charge — a replacement is worth doing. On the iPhone 15 Pro we publish $109 for one.

What the percentage actually means

Maximum Capacity is the charge the battery holds now compared with when it was new. At 80%, a phone that used to last a full day lasts about four-fifths of one — which in practice is the difference between reaching bedtime and hunting for a charger after work.

Lithium batteries degrade by cycles and by heat, not by age alone. A phone charged twice a day, or one that lives on a car dashboard through a Tucson summer, will reach 80% much sooner than the same phone used gently. Heat is the bigger factor of the two, and it is the reason we see more battery work here than the national average would suggest.

The symptoms that matter more than the number

The percentage is a guide; behaviour is the real signal. Replace the battery if the phone shuts down suddenly at 20–40% charge, if it dies in cold weather and then revives when warm, if it gets noticeably hot doing ordinary things, or if it drops ten or more percent in a single short period.

One symptom means stop using the phone: any swelling. A back or screen that has begun to lift away from the frame is a swollen battery pressing outward. Do not charge it, do not press it back down, and bring it in. That is a safety issue rather than a convenience one.

Performance throttling

iOS reduces peak performance on batteries that can no longer deliver current reliably, because the alternative is the phone shutting off mid-task. If Battery Health shows performance management applied, your phone is being slowed deliberately to compensate for the battery — and replacing it removes the reason for the throttling entirely.

This is why a battery replacement often feels like more than a battery replacement. People expect longer runtime and are surprised the phone also feels faster.

Cost, and why it is the best-value repair

We publish $109 on the iPhone 15 Pro and $119 on the iPhone 14. Set that against the price of replacing the handset and the arithmetic is not close. If the phone is otherwise healthy — good screen, working cameras, no water history — a battery is the single highest-value repair available.

Most batteries are a same-day job because we stock the common cells. Diagnostics are free, and the fee comes off the repair if you go ahead.

Before you come in

Back the phone up. It is not strictly required for a battery, but it is free and it removes the only risk worth caring about. If your Battery Health screen shows anything unusual — a service message, or a capacity that dropped suddenly rather than gradually — mention it, because a sharp drop sometimes points at something other than normal wear.

How to slow the wear on the next one

Heat is the biggest single factor, which matters more here than almost anywhere else in the country. A phone left on a dashboard in a Tucson summer ages its battery faster in an afternoon than a month of normal use does. Keep it out of direct sun and out of parked cars.

Charging habits matter less than people think, with one exception: leaving a phone at 100% and plugged in all night, every night, in a warm room is the combination that does damage. Optimised Battery Charging in iOS mitigates it if you leave it enabled.

What the replacement involves

The screen is separated from the chassis, the battery connector disconnected, the adhesive strips released and the cell lifted out. A new battery goes in, the phone is sealed with fresh adhesive and tested through a charge cycle before it goes back.

The reseal matters. A battery fitted without replacing the adhesive leaves the phone less water resistant than it was, and that is a corner some shops cut because it is invisible at the counter.

After the replacement

iOS may report the new battery as unverified on some models — a consequence of Apple's parts pairing rather than a fault with the cell. The battery works normally. We tell you up front whether your model does this, because a message appearing afterwards with no warning is not a good experience.

Battery replacements carry our 90-day service warranty, or the 1-year limited warranty where a genuine cell was used.

Same-day in Tucson Mall

Most batteries are done the same day. Bring the phone; back it up first as a matter of routine. We are inside Tucson Mall at 4500 N Oracle Rd, Ste 204, open Mon–Sat 9am–9pm and Sun 10am–6pm.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 80% battery health mean?
That the battery now holds 80% of the charge it held when new. Apple treats that as the point where a battery is considered worn, and it is where most people start noticing the phone not lasting the day.
How do I check my battery health?
Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. It shows Maximum Capacity as a percentage and flags whether Peak Performance Capability is being managed.
How much is an iPhone battery replacement?
We publish $109 on the iPhone 15 Pro and $119 on the iPhone 14, with older models less. It is among the cheapest repairs available and usually the highest-value one.
Should I replace the battery or the phone?
If the phone is otherwise fine, a battery is a fraction of the cost of replacing it and restores most of what you are missing. Replacing the handset makes sense when the battery is one of several problems.
Does replacing the battery slow anything down?
The opposite. iOS throttles peak performance to prevent unexpected shutdowns on a worn battery; a healthy battery removes the need for that throttling.
